Fused Art Glass             Distinctive Works of Art Glass

            by Rebecca

Fusing    Etching    Sandblasting    Enameling

Rebecca's Artistic Process
The kiln-forming glass is a specialization within the broader domain of glass working. The glass used to create these art pieces is specially tested at the factory to make sure each piece expands and contracts uniformly when heated at high temperatures. This tested compatible glass is more expensive than the cost of stained glass. Fusing techniques are time consuming and require many times that needed for the traditional stained glass techniques.
After the design work is completed, elements including cut sheet glass, crushed glass (frit), and threads of glass (stringers) are assembled. The design is placed in a kiln and fired to melt (fuse) the glass together. The Fusing Cycle requires carefully orchestrated stages of heating and cooling over approximately 12 hours.
A second slumping cycle may then be used to determine the final shape and surface quality of the finished piece of glass. This second cycle of an additional 12 hours at temperatures of between 1050 and 1400 degrees Fahrenheit also involves technical control and ingenuity.
Inclusions of precious metal leaf such as 23K gold and platinum based metals may be used to further enhance these objects of beauty. The artistic techniques of etching, sandblasting, and enameling may also be integrated into the design
Every stage in the process is equally important because even the smallest mistake can cause a fatal flaw. Glass is as fragile as it is beautiful.
